Lagos State lawmakers ask Gov. Ambode to bring back sanitation inspectors to curb Cholera outbreak in the state

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Lagos state Governor, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode to bring back health inspection officers in all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, in order to address the menace of the recent cholera outbreak in the state.

They also called for a major stakeholders’ meeting which would involve the ministries of Health, Environment, Information and Strategy, and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and all Community Development Associations (CDAs, where all participants to tackle the recent cholera outbreak in Oshodi/Isolo Local Council Development Area, LCDA,where six people died and about 45 people were reportedly infected with the disease.

The Chairman, House Committee on Health, Mr. Olusegun Olulade, yesterday alerted other lawmakers to the recent outbreak of the disease which was said to have started after some residents of the community ate “Abacha,” which was believed to have been contaminated.

He therefore implored the state governor to make available health inspection officers to the councils, to inspect food being sold to the public and determine which ones may be potentially contaminated.

He said:
“The outbreak of the disease with the subsequent loss of six lives is regrettable. Its cause has been attributed to the consumption of contaminated local salad by some residents. But in order to forestall a recurrence there is need for a stakeholders’ meeting involving relevant ministries and agencies to be held as soon as possible”.
