Police Arrest Man For Illegally Uninstalling Margaret Ekpo International Airport lighting system In Calabar
A FORTY year old man, Imeh Udofia Akpan, has allegedly vandalised the multi-million naira Margaret Ekpo International Airport lighting system and taken the lamps and poles for sale as scrap to scrap dealers.
The suspect, according to the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Mr Jimoh Ozi Obeh, who paraded him on Wednesday evening at the State Police Command headquarters in Calabar vandalised the lighting system recently installed at the airport to facilitate night landing by aircraft in the airport which has for many years remained in darkness making it impossible for aircraft to fly to Calabar when it was dark
“These are special lights costing millions of naira mounted at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport and work was recently concluded on them by the contractor only for this man to vandalise them and take them for sale as scrap”
He said Mr Udofia Akpan was arrested by his men at Bogobiri where he took the lamps and the poles holding the lights concealed in a white bag which raised the suspicion of policemen on patrol leading to his arrest.
“His action has endangered the lives of those travelling to Calabar through the airport at night because they will come with the believe that there is light on the run way only to be confronted with darkness”’; Ozi said.
He said the man will soon appear in court and warned those in the habit of vandalising public infrastructure to desist as such actions amounts to economic crime.

The suspect told Mycrossriver that the lights were from the airport as he found them hidden under a shrub in the bush and had to pick them for sale as scrap since he is a scrap dealer.
