Nigerian music has evolved over the years and the musicians have evolved right along with their music. There was a time when Nigerian songs could not be played at weddings. Now, if your DJ doesn’t have a Nigerian playlist, fire him/her!
Your 9jaflaver Wedding DJ (me) has come up with a few Nigerian songs that will be perfect on your wedding playlist. There were a lot to choose from, but I had to narrow it down to 10. If you guys want more, let us know and we just may do another list based on popular demand. Back to the list – these songs will make you fall deeper in love, relate with your tradition and move your feet all at the same time!
1. All I Want Is You– Banky W ft. Chidinma
This song was my inspiration for this post actually, and the recently released video got me thinking about whether the DJ will be able to handle my wedding song playlist. A mix of English and Igbo, the song will pull the heartstrings of even the coldest hearts.
1. Femi– MOSA
Mosa is known for releasing songs that will make any girl’s heart skip. FromI Just Want To Say It toPerfect and now,Femi. When I first heard the song, I thought it was about someone called Femi, but then, “Ifemi” means “My love” in Yoruba, so the song can be interpreted that way too.
1. Ololufe– Wande Coal
This song is an evergreen love song that does not have an expiry date. I still hear the song and “enter the spirit” hoping that myOlolufe will walk past me in the process. Wande hit chords in this song that hit some chords in my heart. This is a definite yes! for my wedding playlist.
1. Today Today– Eldee
This song talks about friends becoming lovers. It is a sincere song for people to jam to at their weddings. Eldee switched it up with a danceable beat and lyrics that will get you off your feet.
1. Last Bus Stop– Niyola
The sonorous voice hits you and you just remember why you have decided to spend the rest of your life with your significant other. A mix of Yoruba and English, any satisfied bride would love to have this song on her wedding playlist.
1. Last Bus Stop– Dr. Sid
The two things this song and the one just above it have in common, apart from the song title, are the message behind the song and the fact that they are going to be in my wedding playlist. This is a more upbeat, danceable song, and parts of the video were taken from his actual wedding.
1. Obi Mu O (Remix)– Obiwon
This is another Igbo song, featuring Blaise, Ill Bliss, M.I and Guchi Young. The remix is more upbeat and groovy, but the original is also a wonderful wedding song. What’s more, it has both male and female artists singing, so it’s not too gender-specific.
1. Iyawo Mi– Timi Dakolo
I know a number of people who would have killed me if this song did not enter the wedding playlist. This song was played at every wedding I attended last year. It wa arguably the biggest wedding song of 2015, and has everything a wedding song needs.
1. Ada Ada– Flavour
Another must-have song on your wedding playlist, especially if you are from the Eastern part of Nigeria. What’s more, you don’t have to be called Ada or be the first daughter of your parents to rock this song at your wedding. I was pleasantly surprised when I went for a Yoruba friend’s traditional wedding and I heard this song. The video is also a visual feast of cultural heritage.
1. Made For You– Banky W
I just had to add another Banky W song because this song has been playing in my head since its release. If you like the reggae feel in a song, this is your wedding jam. If you are more of an R&B person, this is also your jam. The song is so versatile, you can slow whine to it or switch it up and do the reggae dance.
Nice but can you make adekunle gold_ready be the number 11
God would surely help you more and more.
