Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has reportedly taken swift action to remove Mrs. Sabina Chikere from her position as the former Permanent Secretary of the State Sports Commission, according to sources. This decision follows the recent redeployment of Chikere from the Sports Commission to the Central Administration Department at the Government House in Benin City.
Mrs. Chikere had previously held the role of General Coordinator for Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin, a team that participates in continental competitions. It’s worth noting that she is also the elder sister of the wife of Edo State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Maryann Shaibu, adding a familial connection to the ongoing political feud between the governor and his deputy over the 2024 governorship succession plans.
Sources within the government house confirmed this development, linking it to the ongoing conflict between Governor Obaseki and his deputy. The exact reason for Mrs. Chikere’s dismissal has not been disclosed, but it appears to be part of the political dynamics in Edo State.
This move comes shortly after Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu withdrew his lawsuit against Governor Obaseki seeking to prevent his impeachment. In a statement, Shaibu cited the need to respect the interventions of prominent individuals, including religious and traditional leaders, as well as his appreciation for the governor’s commitment to peace initiatives as reasons for withdrawing the lawsuit.
