Approximately 25 members of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Akure, the capital city of the state, were reportedly abducted on Friday afternoon by a group of gunmen believed to be kidnappers. The victims, who were en route to Ifon in the Ose local government area for a burial ceremony, were intercepted and taken captive by these suspected kidnappers.
According to an insider, the kidnapped individuals were affiliated with the Oke Igan branch of CAC in Akure, and they were traveling in a church vehicle. The source, who disclosed that two of her family members were among the kidnapped church members, revealed that there has been no communication from the victims. They were purportedly headed to a program in the Ose council area of the state.
The abduction occurred at approximately 3 pm on Friday, and the church vehicle, which was carrying choir members and others, was left abandoned on the roadside.
The State Police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, confirmed the incident, stating that the command received the information on Friday afternoon. She mentioned that the police swiftly initiated action, with detectives from the command actively pursuing the suspected kidnappers.
Odunlami explained, “Yesterday afternoon, the police were alerted to an abandoned church bus with the inscription CAC in the Elegbeka area. There are suspicions that the passengers in the vehicle were kidnapped. The Police Anti-kidnapping squad and other tactical teams have been deployed to the area to rescue the victims and apprehend all those involved in the crime.”
She added that any further updates will be communicated as they become available. It is worth noting that the Owo-Ifon-Benin road, known for its high incidence of kidnappings and armed robberies, is currently in a state of disrepair.
