Residents Of Makoko Criticize The Absence Of Potable Water

Residents of Makoko in the Yaba Local Government Area of Lagos State have lamented over the lack of potable water supply in the community.

They said they have been trekking a long distance to get access to clean water while some had to transport the water on motorcycles or canoes to their homes.

Our correspondent who visited the community on Saturday discovered that there is only one functional borehole operated by a water vendor as most of the boreholes in the community are faulty.

A resident simply identified as Afeez lamented the hardship that members of the community are facing to access potable water which has made water retailing a lucrative business.

“Before residents can access clean water in Makoko, it goes a long way. They have to trek for a long distance. Some of them even use motorcycles to get clean water,” Afeez said.

 Another resident who identified herself as Tolulope said the majority of the community’s boreholes were faulty, adding that the only option left for residents is to transport water on bicycles and boats.

“We have some boreholes in Makoko but most of them are faulty and they do not produce clean water. Here in Makoko, some people buy and resell water. The situation is so bad that some of the residents have to use canoes to transport clean water to their houses while some dip their legs into the dirty river to access clean water.

“I know that Makoko is a dirty place and a slum but the truth of the matter is that this community is not recognised by the government. They only come here once a year to share one or two things but they do not address the major problems,” she said.
