NewsThe Kwara State Government has sanctioned a school teacher at the Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin for brutalising and assaulting a female member of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC).
SaharaReporters had reported how the female corps member accused some staff of the Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, Kwara State, of beating and assaulting her.
According to a source who was privy to the situation, the incident occurred when the female corps member visited the school last week to collect her clearance letter.
SaharaReporters had learnt that one of the teachers had accused her of “not greeting properly.”
“A teacher said she did not greet well and that was how it all started. The teacher beat her and tore her clothes,” the source said.
The event sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of corps members stationed in the state.
When contacted, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Carol Lembu, told SaharaReporters that the incident was currently being resolved.
In a separate update on Friday afternoon, she mentioned that there is a plan to transfer the assaulted corps member from the school.
She said, “The issue has been reported to the appropriate Government agency and an investigation is underway. In the meantime, the corps member will be reposted out of the school for her safety.”
A press statement issued by Sam Bola Onile, Press Secretary, Kwara TESCOM, stated that an investigation into the incident revealed that the school teacher, Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, was guilty of unprofessional conduct.
The statement reads: “In a joint statement by the Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, the Government said the investigative panel set up on the matter found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity which the uniform of the corp members represent.
“Her behaviour contravenes public service rules, and she has therefore been demoted by two-grade levels, according to the statement.
“The teacher is also to be transferred out of her current school as well as undergo counselling sessions,” the statement added.
“The State Government will not tolerate such abuse under any guise. The Government deeply regrets the action of the teacher and reassures the management of the National Youth Service Corps that the development did not represent the people of the State, and it will not happen again,” the statement said.
“It urged teachers in the state to remain law abiding at all times by performing their duties in accordance with the laid-down procedure as the State Government will continue to prioritise training on teaching ethics and procedures of service.”
