The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the charity event sponsored by the ex-queen, Olori Naomi was tainted by overcrowding, leading to a stampede that has now claimed 35 lives, with six others critically injured.
This came following the arrest of former Ooni of Ife’s wife, Naomi Silekunola, the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, Fasasi Abdulahi, and six others following the tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the funfair was initially planned for 5,000 children but investigations revealed that over 7,500 participants showed up, overwhelming the venue’s capacity.
The police have intensified their investigation into the incident and assured the public that those found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread reactions, with many calling for stricter regulations on large public gatherings to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Governor Seyi Makinde has promised accountability and support for the victims’ families, reiterating the government’s commitment to public safety.
