Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person, passed away at the remarkable age of 116.
Her passing was announced by Yoshitsugu Nagata, an official overseeing elderly policies, who stated that Itooka died on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan.
Born on May 23, 1908, Itooka assumed the title of world’s oldest person following the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas in 2023.
When informed of her new status, Itooka humbly replied, “Thank you.” Her 116th birthday celebration was marked with flowers, cake, and a card from the mayor.
Itooka led an active and fulfilling life. A volleyball player in her youth, she was known for her lively spirit. She even climbed Mount Ontake, a 3,067-meter peak, twice.
After marrying at 20, Itooka managed her husband’s textile factory during World War II. Following her husband’s passing in 1979, she lived independently in Nara until her own passing.
Itooka is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren. A private funeral service was held, attended by family and friends.
With Itooka’s passing, the title of world’s oldest person now belongs to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, born just 16 days after Itooka.
