Labour Party Crisis: Julius Abure faction suspends Governor Alex Otti and others indefinitely

The Labour Party faction led by Julius Abure has announced the indefinite suspension of six high-ranking members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, over alleged anti-party conduct.

Others affected by the suspension are Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi. The party’s National Executive Council (NEC) said the decision follows the recommendations of a five-member Disciplinary Committee, which was set up on May 2, 2025, to investigate accusations of actions considered detrimental to the interests of the party.

In a statement issued Wednesday, May 7 and signed by National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party said the suspensions take immediate effect and bar the affected members from all Labour Party activities.

“Recall that on Friday, May 2, 2025, the NEC of the Labour Party constituted a five-man Disciplinary Committee chaired by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi to probe allegations of anti-party activities against Governor Alex Otti and others,” the statement said.

“The committee has completed its work and submitted its findings. After thorough deliberation, the NEC has ratified the recommendations.

Consequently, the following members are hereby suspended indefinitely:
    1.    Dr. Alex Otti
    2.    Senator Ireti Kingibe
    3.    Senator Darlington Nwokocha
    4.    Hon. Victor Afam Ogene
    5.    Hon. Amobi Ogah
    6.    Hon. Seyi Sowunmi.”

Responding to inquiries about Senator Nenadi Usman, the party clarified that she is not a registered member and, as such, cannot be subjected to disciplinary actions. According to the statement, Usman is only a member of the Obidient Support Group, which supported the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

The statement also accused Usman of lacking moral authority to comment on corruption, referencing her alleged dealings with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including asset forfeitures and plea bargains.

“She should explain the origins of her numerous properties across Nigeria and abroad, her media company in Kaduna, and her business interests in Cameroon,” the statement said.

On the issue of political alliances, the party firmly ruled out any merger or coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Labour Party intends to contest the 2027 elections as a standalone party. No further discussions on mergers or coalitions will be entertained,” it concluded.
