Insecurity: “Make military training mandatory for all Nigerians” – Ex-Army boss, Ihejirika tells FG

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (retd), has called for the introduction of mandatory military training for all Nigerians, beginning with participants of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Ihejirika made the call while speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 18 Alumni Association held on Friday night in Abuja.

According to him, making military training compulsory will help foster national unity, discipline, and resilience, especially at a time when the country is grappling with worsening insecurity and social challenges.

“Given the current situation of things in our country, I believe it’s time we start thinking about mandatory military training for our citizens. We can start with the National Youth Service. This will help us build a generation of Nigerians who understand sacrifice, responsibility, and patriotism,” Ihejirika stated.

Reflecting on his early days in the military, the retired army chief said the discipline and sense of duty instilled during training played a major role in shaping his career and his contributions to national development.

Ihejirika also expressed support for the Federal Government’s recent decision to restore the old national anthem, describing it as a step towards reinforcing national identity and unity.

The line, ‘Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand’ perfectly captures the essence of national service and shared identity,” he said.

He, however, lamented that the anthem is gradually losing its relevance and urged that it be given greater prominence in schools, communities, and at national events.

Ihejirika also shared his personal journey, recalling his humble beginnings from his village in Abia State and how military training transformed his outlook on life.

The retired army chief commended the current leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing them as highly experienced, having earned their ranks through real battle experience in places like Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other conflict zones.

He urged political leaders across the country to prioritise peace and stability, warning that no government office or position is sustainable in the absence of national unity.
