
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half‑staff for seven days in honour of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82 .
The announcement came through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirming Buhari’s death and conveying Tinubu’s heartfelt tribute.
In a statement, the president described the late leader as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” and highlighted his enduring legacy of service and sacrifice.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half‑staff across the country for seven days from today,” the statement read in part.
An emergency Federal Executive Council meeting has also been summoned by Tinubu for Tuesday, in tribute to Buhari.
The government plans to accord him full state honours in recognition of his significant contributions to the nation .
In mourning Buhari’s passing, Tinubu extended his condolences to Aisha Buhari and the former president’s family, praying for forgiveness and heavenly reward for the departed soul .
