Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that if elected President in 2027, he will amend Nigeria’s constitution and eradicate corruption within his first month in office, or step down from the position.
Amaechi made the declaration during an X Space discussion tagged Weekend Politics, where he said, “If I become President, I will change the constitution from indigeneship to citizenship. If I do not end corruption in Nigeria within one month, I will tender my resignation.”
He alleged that some influential figures in the country regularly visit the Central Bank of Nigeria to divert public funds for personal use. “It enrages me that those very influential among the ruling class visit CBN often to steal money. If they could use all the money they are pocketing to improve security and the economy, Nigeria wouldn’t be in such dire straits today,” he said.
Amaechi also criticised the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing Professor Mahmood Yakubu as “the worst INEC chairman in the history of Nigeria.”
He further challenged the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to “take a walk along the streets of Port Harcourt, which will reveal who is healthy and who the people actually loved.”
Speaking on economic policy, Amaechi said he would not reverse the removal of fuel subsidy if elected.
Instead, he promised to ensure the proceeds are used to benefit ordinary Nigerians. “I will not reverse the removal of subsidies. I will instead direct the funds into the pockets of Nigerians, not the elite,” he noted.
