Tinubu approved lifetime salary for retiring senior officers – Interior minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced a new policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring at the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above. The policy, aimed at boosting officer welfare, was approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Tunji-Ojo revealed the initiative on Thursday, August 28, during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he outlined the ministry’s achievements and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional performance and capacity across all agencies. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by NPRO/Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham.

“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted that over 50,000 officers have been promoted in the last two years alone, clearing a long-standing backlog. He also revealed that future officer progression will be determined by a new system based on capacity and performance.

In line with the ministry’s focus on institutional enhancement, the minister said new training manuals have been developed and that construction of a world-class Fire Academy is underway. The academy is designed to compete with leading international institutions, including the Arizona Fire Academy.

He further emphasised the importance of mental health in the workplace, assuring officers of the ministry’s full support, and urged the Federal Fire Service to pursue private sector partnerships to enhance service delivery, infrastructure development, and modernisation of firefighting operations in Nigeria.
