Super Eagles star Calvin Bassey has broken his silence after scoring a controversial goal in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers.
Bassey’s equaliser came in the first half after Nigeria had gone behind through an own goal from William Troost-Ekong. But replays showed the ball came off his hand before crossing the line, a moment that left Bafana Bafana players fuming.
With no VAR in play, the referee allowed the goal to stand, sparking wild debate among fans across the continent.
Speaking after the game, Bassey said he was honoured to score his first-ever goal for Nigeria.

He posted: “Honoured to wear this shirt and score my first goal. We didn’t win, but we keep believing if anyone can do it, it is God.”
The Premier League star added that he plans to frame his match jersey to remember the moment.
The goal has divided opinions. Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi defended the referee, stressing that the absence of VAR meant the goal had to stand.
But South African legend Itumeleng Khune blasted the officials, calling it an “obvious handball.” Bafana coach Hugo Broos also didn’t hold back, insisting his side were robbed.
