Terrifying scenes unfolded on September 24 in Bangkok, Thailand, when workers inside a giant sinkhole had to make a quick escape as its walls began to cave in.
A massive 30×30 meter sinkhole, over 15 meters deep, opened in front of Vajira Hospital, Bangkok, after soil collapsed into ongoing subway tunnels.
The 90ft-wide chasm swallowed police vehicles and damaged roads, pipes, and power lines, but miraculously no injuries were reported.
Footage from local media showed authorities gathering at the scene while a vehicle leaned precariously at the edge of the sinkhole. Two electrical poles and a tow truck from the nearby Samsen police station fell into the sinkhole, according to local media reports.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters that dirt from an underground train construction was sliding in, which caused the sinkhole.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said a pipe had burst so water and power lines have also been cut.
By noon, authorities said they had halted further ground movement and were monitoring the site closely.
Outpatient services at the hospital were suspended for two days, while nearby residents were evacuated.
Authorities have launched an urgent investigation into the safety of Bangkok’s underground infrastructure.
