An 82-year-old woman was injured after a bear attacked her while she was out taking a walk on a street in Japan.
The attack occured on the morning of October 8, 2025, in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture,
Security camera footage shows the bear emerging from beside the railway tracks and charging at the woman. She was scratched on the face but remained conscious and able to speak.
The woman took shelter in a passing car and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
After the attack, the bear moved toward the railway area. Local authorities and police continue to monitor the area and warn residents to stay alert.
This incident highlights the growing encounters between wildlife and urban areas in Japan, as bears increasingly appear near towns and roads during the autumn season.
Japan is witnessing a worrying surge in bear attacks, with fatalities in fiscal 2025 already equaling the record high of 2023.
Experts say the rise isn’t only due to growing bear populations but also to changes in human settlement patterns.
As rural depopulation expands, abandoned fields and vacant lots have erased the boundaries between forests and towns. Green corridors now link wildlife habitats directly to urban areas, drawing bears closer to homes.
Wildlife experts emphasize coexistence through smart measures such as securing garbage, installing electric fences, and managing vegetation, while maintaining safety and respect for nature.
