Breaking: Australia bans social media for children, teenagers to reduce online risks

Australia has introduced a groundbreaking ban on social media use for children under the age of 16, aiming to enhance online safety and protect young people from harmful digital experiences.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the regulation, included in the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024, will officially come into effect on 10 December 2025.

The law is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce online risks for minors.

Protecting Young Users from Online Dangers

The government explained that the legislation is designed to shield children from a range of online threats, including cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate or harmful content, and the addictive nature of social media algorithms.

Experts have long warned that prolonged use of social platforms can negatively affect mental health, sleep patterns, and overall development in young adolescents.

Under the new law, it will be illegal for anyone under 16 to create or maintain accounts on popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Reddit, and Kick.

Companies that fail to enforce the age restrictions may face penalties under Australian law.

Government Emphasizes Safety and Parental Support

In a post on X on Monday, Albanese stressed that the ban is not about limiting freedom but about prioritizing children’s well-being.

“This is about letting kids be kids,” he said, adding that the law will empower parents to have informed discussions with their children about online safety.

He further stated in a press release, “We’re banning social media for under-16s to keep them safe online. It’s about protecting their mental health and giving parents the tools to guide them in the digital world.”

Analysts predict that the legislation could set a precedent internationally, as countries around the world look for ways to tackle the growing concern over children’s exposure to social media.
