Why I married SGF Akume — Ooni’s ex-wife Zaynab Otiti-Obanor

Zaynab Otiti Obanor, has opened up on the reasons behind her decision to marry the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume.

The ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, now known as Zaynab Ngohemba, got married to Akume in a private ceremony in 2024.

Zaynab’s latest marriage, which was recently made public, has since generated interest and conversations on social media primarily due to her previous marriages with several prominent figures. 

In a statement issued on Wednesday by her media aide, David Adeoye, and published by ThisDay, Zaynab described the marriage as a union “rooted in maturity, shared purpose and mutual understanding”.

She said the relationship represents the coming together of two individuals already committed to public service, rather than a shift in personal direction.

“It is a partnership shaped by maturity, shared purpose, and an understanding that personal stability strengthens public duty,” the statement read.

“Their partnership represents the meeting of two lives already devoted to public purpose. It is not a reinvention of either individual, but a reinforcement of shared values: humility, discipline, empathy, and responsibility.”

“At a time when Nigerians increasingly demand integrity and humanity from those in leadership, this union sends a subtle but powerful signal that service is strongest when anchored in personal stability, shared values, and a long view of legacy. 

“Together, they embody a leadership model that values empathy alongside authority, and service alongside structure. Their partnership underscores a simple truth: leaders who understand humanity govern better, and societies thrive when service is treated as a calling rather than a platform.”

Zaynab’s marriage to the Ooni of Ife, which took place in March 2016, ended in 2017 after 17 months.
