A Kano resident, Zafrullah Abdulaziz, has expressed anger and frustration after watching two children scavenge for food.
He stated that no tradition or religion justifies throwing children into the streets to fend for themselves.
He described the silence and inaction over Almajiri street begging as a betrayal of humanity that should fuel collective outrage.
“I am beyond angry. Yesterday, I watched a 2-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl scavenge for food in the freezing cold. Shekara biyu fa!,” he wrote in. Facebook post.
“A baby. How did we get here? How have we become so desensitized that we walk past toddlers begging for their lives and feel normal.
“Wallahi there is no excuse… not poverty, not tradition, and certainly not religion, that justifies throwing children into the streets to fend for themselves while the rest of us eat and sleep and breathe fresh air.
“Duk wanda yake tura yaransa to come and SUFFER like this, toh ya tabbata sai Allah Ya tambaye shi amanar da Ya bashi.
“To the leaders who look away, su sani cewa this is a ticking time bomb, and the day it will explode duk sai mun yi regretting!
“To us, the public, our comfort with this street begging culture is a betrayal on our humanity.
A society that doesn’t protect its smallest, most vulnerable members is a society that has lost its way. We need to stop understanding the problem and start demanding an end to it. Haba don Allah.”
