Rivers crisis: APC reaches out to Wike and Fubara

The All Progressives Congress has broken its silence on the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, disclosing that behind-the-scenes negotiations are ongoing to resolve the rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking on  Thursday night, January 29, on TVC News’ Beyond the Headlines, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, revealed that high-level “back-channel” engagements are being used to stabilise the situation in the state. He explained that while the public is focused on court cases and political rhetoric, critical efforts to resolve the crisis are taking place away from the spotlight.

Basiru responded to concerns over the perceived silence of the APC national leadership as Governor Fubara, now seen as aligned with the APC, faces impeachment threats and legal challenges.

He stressed that meaningful political engagement is rarely carried out through press statements, noting that many crucial decisions are taken discreetly rather than in public view. He described politicians as “nocturnal animals,” suggesting that real negotiations often happen quietly.

He assured that the party is working towards a peaceful resolution in which there would be “no victor and no vanquished,” emphasising the importance of reconciliation for stability in Rivers State.

Although Nyesom Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Basiru acknowledged him as a key political stakeholder and a strong supporter of President Bola Tinubu. He confirmed that the FCT minister is actively being engaged, noting that Rivers State is critical to the success of the President’s agenda and that Wike’s cooperation is essential to achieving harmony.

Basiru also indicated that tensions between the party leadership and Wike, following earlier public disagreements, have eased. According to him, the focus has now shifted to broader political goals ahead of 2027.
