President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector‑General of Police (IGP) in a major shake‑up of the nation’s security leadership.
According to sources within the Presidency, Egbetokun was asked to step aside during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, February 23, 2026.
“Yes. Egbetokun is gone,” one presidential aide told journalists, adding that a formal announcement was being prepared and would be released soon.
Senior government and police sources say that Assistant Inspector‑General Tunji Disu is expected to replace Egbetokun as the new IGP.
Disu currently serves as an AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos and is widely seen as the president’s choice for the top police job.
Egbetokun was first appointed as the 22nd Inspector‑General of Police on 19 June 2023 by President Tinubu, but was asked to resign after a period marked by intense public scrutiny.
Calls made to the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, and Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga for comments on the development were not answered at the time of filing this report.
