Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has unveiled an ambitious housing vision aimed at tackling Nigeria’s growing accommodation crisis through large-scale public housing projects.
Sowore said his administration would revive mass public housing across the country while ending what he described as discriminatory housing policies that separate low-income earners from wealthier citizens.
According to him, future housing developments under his government would focus on mixed-income communities designed to accommodate workers, families, students, and professionals within the same environment.
In a statement shared on social media, the AAC presidential candidate said his proposed housing estates would include essential social infrastructure and modern public facilities.
“Under the Sowore administration, Nigeria will return fully to mass public housing, but this time, there will be no discriminatory ‘low-income housing’ that segregates the poor and working class,” he stated
Sowore explained that the planned estates would feature green spaces, schools, shopping centres, theatres, clinics, playgrounds, transport access, and community facilities integrated into residential areas.
He argued that housing should go beyond shelter and become part of broader community development capable of improving quality of life and social inclusion.
The former presidential candidate also accused Nigeria’s political elite of diverting public resources meant for ordinary citizens.
According to him, many influential individuals have used stolen public funds to acquire luxury properties while millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with poor living conditions and rising rent costs.
“For too long, corrupt elites have hijacked land and houses meant for the people, using stolen public funds to build mansions they don’t even live in. That era will end,” he said.
Sowore disclosed that his administration aims to build one million public homes across Nigeria as part of a broader effort to make decent housing more accessible.
He described the proposed homes as affordable, environmentally responsible, and designed to restore dignity to ordinary Nigerians.
“Our goal is to build 1 million decent public homes across Nigeria, affordable, dignified, environmentally responsible, and built for workers, families, students, and communities,” he added.
The AAC candidate concluded by declaring that “an unprecedented new era of public housing” is coming to Nigeria, insisting that housing must become a basic social right rather than a privilege reserved for a few wealthy citizens.
