The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already seen a historic first, with VAR intervening to correct a mistaken identity during USA’s 4-1 win over Paraguay

The 2026 FIFA World Cup witnessed a landmark refereeing moment during the United States’ inaugural group match against Paraguay on Friday night.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) stepped in to transfer a yellow card from an American defender to the Paraguayan forward who had feigned to earn it, marking the first instance of the sport’s mistaken identity protocol being utilised to penalise diving in this manner.
The incident unfolded in the 53rd minute at SoFi Stadium, with the United States already commanding a 3-0 lead and the match essentially decided. Paraguay captain Miguel Almiron hit the deck following minimal contact from United States defender Tim Ream, prompting referee Danny Makkelie to promptly brandish a yellow card, seemingly misidentifying the guilty party.
VAR stepped in. Makkelie was summoned to the pitchside monitor to review the footage. The camera evidence was unequivocal: Almiron, far from being fouled, had taken three full strides after losing possession before dramatically hitting the turf.
There had been no significant contact. The referee returned from the screen, rescinded the caution against Ream, and instead flashed the yellow card at Almiron for simulation.
This intervention underscored one of the most substantial rule amendments FIFA implemented ahead of this tournament.
For the first time at a major tournament, VAR has been granted enhanced authority covering specific corner-kick decisions, incorrect second yellow cards and, most importantly, instances of mistaken identity.
Officials can now rectify a broader range of clear and obvious errors than was previously permitted, including scenarios where the wrong player is handed a disciplinary punishment.
The incident offered a fleeting moment of debate in a match that had otherwise belonged entirely to the United States. The hosts enjoyed the perfect opening to their World Cup journey, racing into a 3-0 lead by the interval before a thunderous SoFi Stadium audience in what seemed like the most impressive 45 minutes in recent USMNT memory.
The breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute, with Christian Pulisic surging forward and picking out Weston McKennie, whose delivery was diverted into his own goal by the hapless Damian Bobadilla.
Folarin Balogun then seized the spotlight, initially seeing a strike correctly chalked off for offside before netting twice – a composed finish from a Pulisic through ball followed by a spectacular weak-foot strike into the top corner during added time.
Pulisic remained the catalyst throughout, his assist drawing him level with Clint Dempsey for fourth place in USMNT records with 21 career assists. Paraguay clawed one back in the 73rd minute courtesy of a slick move, with Julio Enciso delivering a sublime pass to his teammate who confidently slotted past Matt Freese to make it 3-1.
Gio Reyna notched up a fourth goal in the final moments of the match with a stunning outside-of-the-boot finish, ensuring the team kicked off their World Cup campaign with a full three points.
