Owerri, Imo State – Outrage continues to mount across Nigeria following the arrest of 38-year-old Juliet Igwe, accused of brutally torturing a young orphan girl entrusted to her care in Uruala community, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to reports and video footage circulating online, the incident occurred on November 25, 2025. Igwe allegedly dipped the hands of 5- to 7-year-old Onyinyechi (also referred to as Onyinye) into boiling water as punishment for allegedly stealing food. She further poured hot candle wax on the child’s body and used a burning candle to inflict injuries on the girl’s private parts.
Onyinyechi, an orphan whose parents had passed away, was reportedly left in the care of Igwe (her uncle’s wife or relative) by family members. Witnesses and activists claim the child was left to wander with severe injuries for nearly a week before concerned neighbors and residents intervened, rushing her to a hospital. Doctors later determined that two of the girl’s fingers had to be amputated due to infection and tissue decay.
Juliet Igwe was arrested by police following public outcry and the intervention of activist Chidiebube Okeoma. She has been remanded in Owerri Correctional Center. At a magistrate court sitting, the case was transferred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further action, as the charge borders on an offense punishable by life imprisonment.
In court, Igwe reportedly showed little initial remorse. During questioning, she claimed the extreme punishment was intended to deter the child from stealing, admitting she used hot water and candle wax but insisting she did not intend such severe harm.
Imo State’s First Lady and the Commissioner for Women Affairs visited the young victim in the hospital, with the state covering her medical bills. Officials have strongly condemned the abuse and called for stronger protections for vulnerable children.
The case has sparked widespread condemnation on social media and forums like Nairaland, where users expressed horror at the level of cruelty inflicted on a defenseless child. Many have called for swift and severe justice, with some drawing attention to broader issues of child abuse and domestic servitude in parts of the country.
Child rights advocates are using the incident to renew calls for better oversight of children placed in informal care arrangements, especially orphans, and stricter enforcement of child protection laws.
Onyinyechi is currently receiving treatment, though she faces long-term physical and psychological trauma. Her story has highlighted the urgent need for community vigilance and systemic support for at-risk children in Nigeria.
Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as the case proceeds to the High Court.
