“This is how I ended up selling pure water…” — Man recounts unexpected childhood experience

A man has shared the story of how an innocent childhood trip to visit family turned into four years of hawking pure water and other goods in Ogun State, an experience he says shaped his life.

According to the man, the journey began in 2006 when his uncle visited his family in Abuja to take one of his cousins to Lagos.

Not wanting to be separated from his cousin, he cried until his mother agreed to let him travel, with his father’s approval.

The man said they arrived in Lagos that evening and settled into a compound where two of his uncles lived. However, just three days later, he and his cousin were informed that they would begin selling pure water.

Childhood trip takes unexpected turn

The man said, “This is how I ended up selling pure water for 4 years in Ogun State. In 2006, my uncle visited us in Abuja. I had a cousin who was quite stubborn, and my uncle came to take him to Lagos. I couldn’t bear the thought of my cousin leaving me alone in Abuja, so I cried and cried until my mom agreed to let me go along with him, with my dad’s permission since he was out of town at the time. We arrived in Lagos at 8:27 PM in 2006. My uncle was single at the time, but his elder brother, also my uncle, was married and had three children: two boys and a girl. We all lived in the same compound. Three days later, believe it or not, my cousin and I were told that we were going to start selling pure water. I couldn’t believe my ears. It felt like a joke, but we began selling pure water at Agabara bus stop and in Agbara market and other places…”

Story resonates with social media users

The account has generated reactions online, with many users expressing sympathy over the man’s childhood experience while praising his resilience.

Others reflected on the realities faced by many children who engage in street trading, with some describing the story as a reminder that difficult beginnings do not always determine a person’s future.
