A Nigerian lawyer, Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, Esq., has formally sued MTN Nigeria over what she described as the unusually rapid depletion of her 800GB annual data plan.
Adams, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, said she subscribed to the plan on May 15, 2026, for ₦125,000, but was left with just 91.45GB by August 27.
In a formal complaint addressed to MTN Nigeria customer care, the lawyer said the network’s records showed that about 708.55GB of her 800GB allocation had been used within approximately 104 days.
She described the rate of depletion as unusual, particularly because the plan was purchased as an annual package.
According to her complaint, only about 11.4 per cent of the original data allocation remained.
Adams said she has been an MTN subscriber since she was 10 and raised concerns about the accuracy and accounting of the deductions from her data allocation.
She explained that she does not consider herself a high-volume data user and said her internet activities are mainly carried out on a single mobile device.
She said:
“I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device.”
The lawyer therefore requested that MTN investigate the depletion and provide a detailed account of how the data was consumed.
Adams asked the telecommunications company to provide records covering the period from May 15 to August 27, 2026, so she can reconcile the original 800GB allocation with the approximately 708.55GB reportedly consumed.
Among other things, she requested the date and time of each data-consumption session, the volume deducted during each session and a chronological statement showing her data balance and deductions.
She also requested information on the applications, services, categories or destinations responsible for each significant deduction, where such information is technically available to MTN.
The legal practitioner said the extent and speed of the depletion raised legitimate concerns that warranted a proper technical and account-level review.
She called for an immediate investigation and reconciliation of the data usage, stressing that she wants a transparent explanation of how the deductions were made.
As of the time of the complaint, Adams was seeking a response from MTN Nigeria and detailed records that would allow her to independently verify the reported data consumption.
