A Nigerian lady has expressed frustration over traditional wedding expectations, questioning why she has to fulfil certain obligations towards family members who allegedly contributed nothing to her upbringing.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she lamented that no member of her family from her village contributed to her education, upbringing or supported her family financially. However, she claimed that tradition still requires her to return to them when she gets married.
In her words, she said:
“I cannot believe that not a single family member has contributed anything to take care of me or my family from my village. No single person has come to spend anything on my education, upbringing, whatever it is. No single person has contributed shit.”
She further stressed that she finds it upsetting that relatives who were absent throughout her upbringing would still be involved in her marriage and benefit from traditional wedding arrangements.
According to her, the thought of having to go back to the same people, have her bride price paid to them and provide traditional items for them has left her frustrated.
“E dey pain me say these people no contribute anything to my life, but because of tradition, I literally have to go there and put on a show for them and get married for them and dance around for them and all that. It pisses me off,” she added.
Her comments have prompted mixed reactions online, with some social media users relating to her frustration over traditional wedding expectations.
Others, however, may argue that such rites are cultural practices involving the wider family, regardless of their financial contribution to her upbringing.
