Nathaniel Bassey makes history as first African gospel artist to hit one billion YouTube views

Nigerian gospel singer, Nathaniel Bassey has achieved a major milestone after becoming the first African gospel artist to surpass one billion views on YouTube, attracting attention from music lovers and Christians.

The singer’s official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, recorded more than 1.014 billion views as of November 1, 2026, alongside approximately 5.24 million subscribers.

The achievement comes as Bassey’s October edition of the Hallelujah Challenge continues to draw attention to his worship ministry and music beyond Nigeria.

Bassey opened his YouTube channel on March 4, 2011, and has spent more than 15 years sharing gospel songs, worship sessions and ministry-related content.

His Hallelujah Challenge, which began in 2017, has also contributed to his online popularity. The midnight prayer and worship programme connects Christians across different countries through virtual gatherings.

The achievement represents a significant moment for Nigerian gospel music, demonstrating how digital platforms have helped African gospel ministers reach audiences across geographical boundaries.

With more than 5.24 million subscribers, Bassey’s channel has built a substantial online audience over the years.

Although the one billion views do not necessarily represent unique listeners, the figure highlights the level of engagement with his music and worship content.

His achievement also draws attention to the growing international visibility of African gospel music through digital streaming platforms.
