A Nigerian woman, identified as Esther, has taken to social media to express her profound sadness after witnessing the harsh realities of tenant evictions during a recent visit to a High Court.
In a Facebook post, Esther shared her distress after observing an array of household items littered across the court premises. Upon making inquiries, she discovered that the belongings had been seized from tenants who fell into arrears and were subsequently unable to pay their rent. According to court officials, the landlords had successfully obtained court injunctions to eject the tenants, leading to the confiscation of their personal property by the authorities.
Esther said she witnessed members of the public arriving to auction off the seized goods. She noted that the items were being sold at drastically reduced prices. Esther revealed that she broke down in tears during the ordeal and ultimately declined offers to purchase any of the discounted items, stating that her conscience would not allow her to profit from the tenants’ misfortune.

‘’I went to the High Court today, and what I saw there broke my heart.
Something happened that I was haven’t been able to get out of my head.
As soon as I stepped into the premises, I noticed something unusual. People’s household belongings were packed everywhere…Freezers. Refrigerators. Mattresses. Furniture. Almost every household item you could think of.
I was curious, so I asked one man what all those things were doing there.
He told me they belonged to people who had been evicted by their landlords because they couldn’t pay their rent, and their properties had been taken for sale.
But what shocked me the most wasn’t just seeing the properties.
It was seeing the crowd of people gathered around, buying and bargaining over these belongings. It looked almost like a bazaar sale.
People were buying things for ridiculously low prices.
And I just stood there thinking…
Imagine struggling to pay your rent, losing the roof over your head, and then somewhere, people are happily bargaining over the very things you worked so hard to acquire.
I cried. Honestly, I did
The man even approached me and asked me to buy something.
I told him I couldn’t. Not because I didn’t need anything, but because my conscience wouldn’t let me.
Even if those things were offered to me free of charge, I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking them.
Now, I understand that landlords have their rights, and tenants also have responsibilities. But something about that entire experience left me deeply uncomfortable.”
