Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton win bigin New York primaries
U.S republican and Democratic party candidates Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton pulled a major upset last night as they won in the New York Primaries.
The significant win in New York, where both candidates have huge follower-ship and backing moves them closer to picking up the nomination tickets for their parties in the U.S Presidential elections.
As of12 a.m.European Time, Trump held 847 delegates, while Ted Cruz had 553 and John Kasich had 148, according to a CNN estimate. A Republican candidate needs 1,237 delegates to clinch the nomination.
While Hilary Clinton was leading with 1,930 delegates including 1,443 pledged delegates and 487 super delegates. Sanders had a total of 1,223 delegates including 1,183 pledged delegates and 40 super delegates. A Democratic candidate needs 2,383 delegates to secure the nomination.
Speaking to supporters while she was applauded as Jayz/Alicia Keys songEmpire state of Mindsplayed in the background, Hilary Clinton said,
“We started this race not far from here on Roosevelt Island,” Clinton said in her victory speech. “Andtonight, a little less than a year later, the race for the Democratic nomination is in the homestretch and victory is in sight.”
While Trump boasted, ” Senator Cruz was just about mathematically eliminated.”
“We don’t have much of a race anymore based on what am seeing on the television,”
“We’re going to go into the convention I think as the winner.”
