Metro station hit by suicide bombers in Brussels attacks has been reopened (See Photo)

The Maalbeek metro station in Brussels reopened to passengers today Monday, April 25 after being shut down for over a month following the March 22 attacks in the city, which killed 34 people.

During the attacks, a suicide bomber detonated explosives on a Metro train at Maelbeek shortly after 9 a.m., killing 16 people, an hour after two other bombers killed many people at Brussels Airport.

A remembrance wall has been set up in the station and artist Benoit van Innis, whose tiled portraits were damaged in the attack, is said to be working on a project based on the massacre. Hand-written notes on the wall expressed condolences for those killed.

The scene at the heart of rush hour was calm, with commuters expressing patience over the month-long closure, despite criticism of Belgium’s handling of the aftermath of the attacks.
