Pedro: I can’t be part of first Chelsea team to lose against Tottenham
Spanish winger, Pedro, desperate to give something back to fans after Chelsea’s poor season, he says he can’t be part of first Chelsea team to lose at home to Tottenham in 26 years
Pedro was just two years old the last time Tottenham won at Stamford Bridge. For a man accustomed to the difficulty of competing against fierce rivals in Real Madrid during a career at Barcelona lasting more than a decade, he finds Chelsea’s domination over Spurs remarkable.
Since Gary Lineker headed a late winner on February 10 1990, Tottenham fans have travelled to west London every season in hope only to return in disappointment.
Should League leaders Leicester fail to beat Manchester United on Sunday, those supporters will be even more desperate for the drought to end the following evening because victory would keep their slim title hopes alive.
Over the past 26 years, many players have arrived at Chelsea and helped maintain that run. And Pedro, who joined from Barcelona for £21.4million last August, told Standard Sport:
“None of us want to be part of the team that lose the record and we are really concentrating on making sure we keep the run going.”
Several Chelsea players, such as Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard, have made no secret of this extra incentive, implicitly saying they’d rather Leicester to win the the title.
“Is it another incentive that beating Spurs will stop them winning the League? Yes. But the most important thing for us is to win this match.
“The fact it could have an effect on the championship and be advantageous to Leicester is secondary. Leicester have played really well this season and deserve to be where they are.
“I realise this is a big big game for the Chelsea fans, the players. I know it is a really important derby in England and a match that is always played with a lot of passion and emotion.” The former Barcelona star added
The Blues were knocked out of all four competitions by March and will not even be in Europe next term, they had contrasting fortunes, with Chelsea’s title defence over by Christmas and Spurs poised to clinch a Champions League spot.
