The Supreme Court Wednesday morning upheld the election of Chief Dave Umahi as the governor of Ebonyi State.
The full panel of the court presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed while dismissing the appeal filed the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Chief Edward Nkwegu said it will give reasons for its judgement on February 5.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu had also earlier upheld the election of Umahi.
The Ebonyi State governorship election petition tribunal had in October in Abakaliki dismissed the petition filled by Chief Nkwegu challenging the declaration of Umahi as winner of April 11 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for lacking in merit and the inability of the petitioner to prove allegations of corrupt practices and criminalities as contained in the petition.
Dissatisfied with the judgment of the tribunal, the petitioner proceeded to the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu to challenge the verdict.
