There have been several positive aspects for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men so far. The new players are settling nicely, the team is playing attacking football, and the results have also been there. But one of the biggest news has been the play of Mason Greenwood. A highly-touted Academy prospect, the Englishman has definitively taken a step forward in his development this summer.

The 17-year-old striker has been United’s top scorer in the pre-season tour with two goals in three outings, including the game-winning strike against Inter in the most recent match. That goal against Inter was the perfect proof of how mature beyond his years he is. After controlling a difficult ball, Greenwood made space for himself inside the box and drilled the ball into an impossible angle past the goalkeeper.

However, let’s not treat Greenwood as if he came out of nowhere. The 17-year-old striker is coming off a huge 2018-19 season, notching 31 goals in 30 U18 Premier League appearances. If we count all competitions, including the EPL and the Champions League, Greenwood registered 42 goals and 12 assists in 49 outings.

What’s going to happen with Greenwood this season?

The biggest question right now lies on where he can go from here. Solskjaer could easily make him part of the senior squad, but that wouldn’t be beneficial if he’s not going to be playing on a regular basis. The most likely scenario right now is to see Greenwood playing for the Reserves in the 2019/20 season. But he could also feature in Cup matches and as a substitute from time to time.

He might be 17 years old, but he has proven this summer that he has everything a player takes to triumph at the next level. Putting Marcus Rashford on the fast track made wonders for his development, and Greenwood could easily follow a similar path.

Right now, he’s proving he belongs in the first team. And it seems it won’t be long before he gets a name as a regular fixture for the senior squad at Old Trafford. The talent is clearly there.
