Towards the expansion of judiciary reform agenda to enhance access to justice, speedy disposal of cases and efficient administration of justice, a new division of Court of Appeal has been commissioned in Awka, Anambra State today, 5th February, 2020.

The appeal court which is the first in Anambra State, twenty nine years after creation as well as the 18th in the Country, was commissioned by President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachiwa, alongside Governor Willie Obiano at the court premises in Awka.

The court which is primarily an appellate court, hears appeals from courts and tribunals such as code of conduct tribunal and election tribunals.

At inception in 1976, the Court of Appeal had the Lagos, Kaduna and Enugu divisions, but by 1977, the number was increased to five with the establishment of Benin and Ibadan divisions, subsequent upon which other divisions were added.
Recall that in 2018, Governor Obiano set up a five-man court of Appeal Project Committee headed by Dr. Onyechi Ikpazu SAN.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, Barrister Pat Igwebuike serves as its Secretary, while other members include, Retired Justice Anthony Igu, Mr. Emeka Etiaba SAN as well as Barrister Uju Nworgu.
