UEFA have baffled supporters by announcing that the European Championships which are due to take place next summer would still to be known as ‘Euro 2020’- then seemingly going back on their decision.
It was announced on Tuesday that as a result of the coronavirus crisis the tournament, which was due to start in three months, has been postponed a year, and will now take place between June 11-July 11 2021.
UEFA seemingly decided, however, than rather than changing the title of the tournament it would stay as it is in its current format.
They released a statement on Friday which read: “CONFIRMED: Although it will provisionally take place from 11 June- 11 July 2021, #EURO2020 will still be known as UEFA EURO 2020.”
Supporters reacted with bemusement to the news, with one replying on Twitter: “So it’s Euro 2020 that will be played in 2021. That makes sense, okay,” while another added “What’s the point if it’s 2021. Are you really that lazy to design a new logo?”
And just a few hours later UEFA tweeted again to say: “With apologies for the earlier error, to be clear no decision has yet been made on the name of the rearranged EURO to be held in 2021.
“The earlier tweet was sent by mistake.”
