FIFA is reportedly considering extending the summer transfer window until December 31, while expiring contracts could run beyond June 30.
The European football calendar remains up in the air as competitions remain on pause until the outbreak of coronavirus clears up.
The uncertainty has implications for next season, with decisions yet to be made on whether the continent’s professional leagues will be abandoned or allowed to go ahead in the coming months.
Now, L’Equipe claims FIFA is studying the possibility of extending the summer transfer window until the end of this calendar year.
Summer windows in Europe are generally held between July and September, although some of its smaller nations open for business in June.
However, this is a unique case due to the COVID-19 pandemic, giving clubs less time to plan ahead with each day that passes.
Such an extension could also apply to players with contracts that expire on June 30, both this year and next.
As per internal documents seen by Reuters, those contracts could be allowed to run until the new end dates of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns.
