Carles Puyol, former Barcelona captain and Spain’s World Cup hero, turns 42 years old today.
Six La Liga triumphs, three Champions League winners’ medals, two Copa del Reys, six Spanish Super Cups, two European Super Cups and two Clubs World Cups. Carles Puyol played through Barcelona’s golden era and is one of the club’s most decorated players.
Also Spain fans could never forget his powerful header which sent them into 2010 World Cup final, in which Spaniards eventually won their first ever World Cup champions. 2008 European championship title was another honor wrote in the legend’s career.
As a Barcelona skipper, Puyol earned respects even from their rivals Real Madrid’s fans. One of his classy gesture remembered by all was in first leg of Copa del Rey final, 2013, he kept Gerard Pique from showing the referee a lighter thrown by Madrid fans, trying to make Pique stay focused on the match and not to get others in trouble.
