The next few transfer windows are set to look very different than previous years with the financial impacts of coronavirus limiting what most clubs can spend.
Barcelona’s vice-president Jordi Cardoner confirmed that many teams will partake in swap deals this summer with several having big squads and high earners they need to get off the books.
The window is likely to be restructured with a mid-August start date and could be open until October to give clubs who are struggling the chance to sell.
Manchester United could dictate a lot of the window, with the club being in a healthy financial position while Manchester City may also have some funds to spend, but significantly less than they have enjoyed previously.
Arsenal and Tottenham will be working with a much tighter budget, as will Juventus, Real Madrid and Barca. Clubs will also face the dilemma of plunging player values, with few buyers in the market and some clubs desperate to sell, particularly if they have to get players off the books to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
Clubs will be more desperate for cash the longer football is suspended or forced to take place behind closed doors, meaning swap deals could even become the favoured options for the majority. Sportsmail takes a look at some of the exchange deals that could happen in the next window.
The Manchester United midfielder has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for the majority of this season.
The Frenchman has been limited to just eight appearances in all competitions after needing surgery on his ankle in January.
He has had a fractured relationship with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his agent Mino Raiola has regularly talked up the possibility of him going back to Juventus.
But the Serie A side would not be able to pay anywhere near the fee of £89million United splashed in 2016, meaning they would have to offer the Red Devils an exchange if they wanted their man back.
Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been mooted as a possible makeweight with the Welshman having an up and down debut season with the Italians. But United may want more than one player in exchange for the 26-year-old, such as fellow midfielders Douglas Costa and Adrien Rabiot.
Transfer expert Nicolo Schira claims Pogba remains the top target for Juve but they could have competition from Real Madrid.
The La Liga side have admired the midfielder for a long time and could offer United a tempting swap proposal.
Gareth Bale has been linked with United on numerous occasions and the Wales star is out of favour at the Bernabeu.
As one of the highest earners at the club, Real are looking to get him off the books and a move back to the Premier League could suit Bale.
The Borussia Dortmund winger is the most in-demand player at the top end of world football and United are desperate to win the race to sign him.
But the Bundesliga side have placed a £100million price tag on the 20-year-old, a fee that few would be able to pay given the current financial climate.
Dortmund have a history of taking and developing young English talent and would reportedly be interested in negotiating a swap deal plus cash for United starlet Mason Greenwood.
The 18-year-old has had an impressive first season of senior football and is tipped to be a future England star.
However, United are thought to be very against making Greenwood part of any deal and would strongly resist an approach.
Sancho has plenty of suitors but they may find the same obstacle in their way.
City only signed Cancelo from Juventus last summer as part of a swap deal for Danilo but the Portugal right-back could already be heading for the exit door.
The 25-year-old has been limited to 24 appearances in all competitions, occasionally interchanging with Kyle Walker in the starting XI.
And reports claim Pep Guardiola is keen to bring Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo to the Etihad and is willing to part with money and offer his former club Cancelo in order to reach a deal.
Semedo was apparently eager to leave last summer in search of regular first-team football, but opted to stay.
Talks over a new contract for the full-back have stalled recently, and with the Portuguese’s current deal expiring in 2022, Barca want to cash in on him before his value falls – but could be swayed with a satisfactory player-plus-cash exchange.
Cancelo would fit the bill with the defender being a like-for-like replacement and is young enough to still make significant improvements in his game.
Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has been on Barca’s radar for a while and the Argentine is thought to be keen on a move to the Nou Camp to link up with countryman Lionel Messi.
Martinez is the LaLiga side’s top target, but an impressive season in Serie A with 16 goals in all competitions has made him an expensive one.
Barca are unable to pay out big money but could offer Antonio Conte’s side Antoine Griezmann, who has struggled to live up to expectations in his first season with the club.
The Frenchman is still one of the best forwards in world football and could form a formidable partnership with Romeu Lukaku.
The Arsenal captain has been unable to agree a new contract with the club and could leave for free next summer if the Gunners don’t sell.
Several clubs are interested in the 30-year-old but Real may be in the best position to offer a suitable swap.
Luka Jovic has had a difficult season in Spain after his £50million move last summer.
The 21-year-old has only managed two goals and has also had some problems off the pitch after breaking lockdown rules to return home in March.
An exchange would mean Arsenal received another option up front and a player with vast potential to improve. However, reports at the end of April claimed Real were prepared to give the Serbia international another chance to prove himself, but a possible deal for Aubameyang could alter that stance.
The stories linking Thomas Partey with a move to the Emirates have gotten stronger in recent weeks with the player thought to be open to a switch.
The defensive midfielder is reportedly Mikel Arteta’s No 1 transfer target but signing him outright would likely cost in the region of £43m.
With the Gunners unable to splash out huge amounts on transfers they would likely have to offer up a player to depart in the other direction.
Atletico are said to be keen on Alexandre Lacazette, whose contract is up in 2022. A deal may suit both parties with the striker having been in and out of the starting line-up this season.
Tanguy Ndombele could be on his way out of Tottenham after becoming frustrated under Jose Mourinho.
The midfielder,a club-record £54m signing, is apparently unsettled and was called out by his manager following his performance against Burnley.
He is another player Barca are keen on but would only be able to sign in-exchange for others.
Brazilian Arthur has been considered as a possible makeweight but he is adamant his future remains with the Catalans, while Samuel Umtiti has also been mentioned.
The centre-back has been linked with several clubs since January and would provide competition in defence for Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.
