Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has slammed the club’s transfer strategy after revealing they signed his seventh choice transfer target over his other preferred players.
The experienced Dutch boss replaced David Moyes at United in 2014 and spent two seasons at Old Trafford before being sacked.
In his first year in charge, United splashed out in the region of £150million on Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Falcao, Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria – whose brief stint was notoriously underwhelming.
The following summer, United spent big again by signing Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian, Sergio Romero and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Despite winning the FA Cup in his final year, van Gaal’s time at United is largely remembered as being unsuccessful with players questioning his tactics and openly criticising him.
However, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss insists his failure to revive the glory days at Old Trafford was not entirely his fault and blamed the club for not delivering him the players he wanted despite their strong finances.
Looking back on his time at United, van Gaal told Voetbal International: ‘Manchester United did not have the qualities to become champions and had an outdated selection with 10 players over 30, five over 35.
‘So I told them I was going to rejuvenate and which players should come. I didn’t get one of those.
‘Then you end up in a different segment and as a coach you have to push your boundaries. You don’t expect that at the richest club in the world.
‘A turnover of £600 million and can’t buy the players you need. You should buy number one and not number seven.
‘Of course, the selling club also thinks: ‘If you are so rich, you also have to pay the highest amount imaginable for a player’. That was what happened with transfers.
‘Then you have to do with the numbers seven or eight on your wish list. For which you actually pay way too much money, on which the coach is judged and convicted.’
Although van Gaal was a frustrated figure at United, he insists winning silverware with the club will always be something he is immensely proud of.
He added: ‘Despite those disappointments, Manchester United did win the FA Cup. Manchester United has actually been the greatest achievement of my career.’
