Chelsea are not considered the favourites to sign German starlet Kai Havertz, contrary to reports linking him with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward has been attracting interest from across Europe, but Chelsea were said to be leading the race for his signature.

However, a report from The Athletic claims both clubs are “miles apart” in their valuation of the player, which is currently scuppering any hopes of a deal.

Leverkusen rate Havertz at around the £90million mark, but were willing to listen to offers for less as a starting point in negotiations.

It seems Chelsea are one of few clubs still able to spend big in the transfer market, and are looking to make Havertz their third signing of the summer – following the impending arrivals Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Buying clubs are hopeful the coronavirus crisis will push transfer fees down, and Leverkusen are bracing themselves for offers as low as £70m.

They are in no rush to sell their prized asset for less than what they believe he is worth though.

The 21-year-old still has two years remaining on his contract and is currently spearheading the club’s Champions League hopes.

While Leverkusen chiefs are aware they will be able to command more for Havertz this summer than next, they are also under no illusions that without him, they would struggle to finish in the top four next season.

That alone is worth at least £30m to the club at a minimum, so unless potential suitors are prepared to stump up close to Leverkusen’s valuation, it’s unlikely they’ll sell.

Bayern Munich are among the other sides keen on the youngster, but they are nowhere nearer to agreeing a deal.

The Bundesliga champions-elect are also prioritising other targets, with Man City’s Leroy Sane top of their wishlist, while a move for a full-back is also in their plans.
