Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks with Red Bull Leipzig over the particulars of the deal to bring Timo Werner to Stamford Bridge.

The Leipzig forward’s move to west London, after a deal in principle between the two clubs was agreed last week, is nearing a completion.

Though the transfer has been pushed back due to a delay in Werner’s medical, because of coronavirus travel restrictions, all parties are confident a deal will be agreed with a few details still to be ironed out, according to The Telegraph.

Werner has a £53m release clause at his current club, and has scored 31 goals in 42 appearances for Julian Nagelsmann’s side this season.

But the 24-year-old looks set to work under Frank Lampard, who secured the deal after holding talks – alongside technical performance advisor and ex-Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech – with the German before the coronavirus lockdown, according to reports.

The deal is set to be formally announced soon, with both clubs able to choose a mutually beneficial time to reveal the transfer to the world as Leipzig are not on the German stock exchange.

Werner’s arrival is already Chelsea’s second summer acquisition, with Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech agreeing a deal in February ahead of a move for the 2020-21 season.

Currently, according to the Athletic, Werner is unable to fly to England to put the finishes touches on the transfer.

Chelsea doctors would not be able to fly to Germany because they would have to isolate for two weeks upon their return.

This would mean that the doctors would be unavailable for Frank Lampard and his squad as new government rules state that all those arriving in Britain – including UK nationals –  are required to provide an address where they will self-isolate for 14 days.

To avoid this, the Blues could use the German FA doctor in the meantime but are more likely to wait until the Bundesliga season is over on June 27 or travel restrictions in the UK change.
