Andy Robertson Wants To Stay At Liverpool For The Rest Of His Career After Premier League Win

Andy Robertson wants to remain at Liverpool for the rest of his career and build a legacy of success.

The Scotland captain is celebrating ending the club’s 30-year wait for an English league title after they were confirmed as champions on Thursday evening, following Manchester City’s defeat at Chelsea.

Robertson also won the Champions League with Jurgen Klopp’s side 12 months ago, but stressed that these feats were just the start of what he wanted to achieve at Anfield.

Asked if he could see out his playing days on Merseyside, the 26-year-old left-back told talkSPORT: ‘That’s my plan. Whether I am good enough at 33 or 34 to continue to do that, we will wait and see.

‘I don’t want to go anywhere. This club has been so special to me in a short space of time. My family love it, I love it and I don’t want to go anywhere else.

‘There is no better team in the world just now than Liverpool. Why would any of us want to leave?

‘We have got a young squad and we have to be looking at the next five years to try and add more and more trophies.

‘To start with the big two is always good and now we have the freedom to go and add to it.

‘The feeling we had last night when we were all together to win the Premier League was amazing.

‘We don’t want that to be a one-off, or only two times in our career. We want that all the time. That’s what will drive us forward next season and the seasons after.’

Manager Klopp, meanwhile, echoed Robertson’s ambitions and warned Liverpool’s rivals they will not stop their pursuit of more trophies as they aim to become English football’s greatest champions.

The Anfield club have now won the English title 19 times and Klopp — who is contracted to June 2024 — has mapped out his ambition for the coming years and wants Liverpool to surpass Manchester United’s total of 20 championships.

The weight of history has often burdened Liverpool since 1990 but Klopp believes this triumph will be liberating for a squad who have been tied down on long-term deals.

They have won four trophies in 13 months and the German does not think they have reached the summit of their ambitions.

They cannot add any more silverware before the end of this campaign but if Liverpool — who have set a record for clinching a title in the quickest time — keep winning, they will smash Manchester City’s 100-point barrier set in 2017-18. It is a tall order but one they will aggressively pursue.

‘I couldn’t be more thankful to be part of that but the consistency the boys have shown is so exceptional I can’t describe it,’ said Klopp. ‘I — and we — will not stop, that’s it. We will stay focused and we see the opportunity.

‘But “will not stop” does not mean we will win everything. We just want to improve because the other teams are good already and will improve. Man City are absolutely exceptional.

‘I can’t promise we will win something but we will try everything to improve and I think that is possible.

‘The consistency is difficult to improve. If we could keep that, it would be nice because even the games we lost were not bad. ‘When we lost last year at Man City, it was because of 11mm, it was not a bad game for us against a super team.

‘We use our history rather than being held back by it. It is in a good place — that is why we are here. We will make sure we are still good from now on. It is still a nice moment but there are still seven games to go and we want to play our best football in these games. Hopefully, we will do that.’

Many will wonder whether Liverpool will strengthen from this position but Klopp is most unlikely to make any signings when the transfer window opens — as he is so excited about emerging young talents such as Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams.

He also expects Takumi Minamino — a £7million signing from Red Bull Salzburg in January — to improve significantly next season. These players will all feature in the final seven matches of the campaign and Klopp has promised to attack the 21 points available with all his might.

‘Getting that kind of points tally (100 plus) sounds pretty nice to me,’ said Klopp.

‘I’m not sure it’s possible

because six of the remaining seven games we play in a very short period of time. It’s every three days. We will have to make a lot of changes.

‘It will be the most intense period and, by the way, it was the reason why I wanted that we won it last night. We’d worked two-and-a-half years for that and I didn’t want to wait any longer.
