Liverpool are ‘very close’ to signing 29-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara. 

The German champions want £32million for the Spaniard, who has been at the club for seven successful seasons but is seeking a new challenge. 

According to SPORT, negotiations are at an advanced stage. 

Liverpool are understood to want to pay the fee in instalments rather than in one lump sum this summer. 

Alcantara’s contract with Bayern expires next year and talks over a fresh deal have reached an impasse. 

A move for Alcantara would not appear to fit with Liverpool’s model of signings, with FSG preferring to go for young stars who can accrue value. 

Alcantara is approaching the final few years of his career so an Anfield switch would be a surprise. 

But Jurgen Klopp has long been an admirer of the Brazilian-born midfielder. 

One potential hitch could be interest from Barcelona, who have the option to re-sign their former player for just £22.5m due to a buy-back clause. 

Alcantara has made 35 appearances for Bayern this season, scoring three times in total. 

The Reds are not predicted to have a big summer in the transfer market given the settled nature of the first team and financial impact of coronavirus.
