There aren’t many better sights in football than an outfield player going in net and we had another superb instance of that happening in the Sevilla-Eibar game in La Liga last night.
After scoring the winning goal in the 56th minute, Lucas Ocampos ended the game in crazy fashion when he put on the goalkeeper’s shirt and gloves on before making a crucial 100th minute save.
With all five substitutions made, goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik picked up an injury later on and it was Argentine international Ocampos who stepped up to the plate and went in between the sticks for the final four minutes.
And having already been on his way to being the hero, Ocampos produced a superb stop to preserve the Andalusian outfit’s lead in the dying embers.
Eibar’s goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic raced up to the box in search of an equaliser and looked like he had salvaged a point in the 100th minute after the ball dropped to him six yards out following a long throw into the box.
He stabbed goalwards but Ocampos came up with a fantastic instinctive save to deny his opposite number. A quite ridiculous ending to the game.
It was an extraordinary all-action Man of the Match display from the former Monaco man, who reflected on his remarkable night’s work.
“It was a strange moment for sure,” Ocampos said post-match, as per Yahoo Sports.
“Sometimes I play around as a goalkeeper in practice, but I never imagined that I would have to do it in the final minute of a game.
“The goalkeeper trainer just told me not to leave the net to avoid making a mistake, and the ball ended up coming my way and I was able to make the save.
