Paris Saint-Germain’s wild celebrations after reaching the Champions League final were incredibly passionate – but it could be the key reason Bayern Munich are favourites to win the competition.
The French side dismantled RB Leipzig 3-0 on Tuesday night to reach their first ever Champions League final and bedlam followed in the dressing room.
Players were seen jumping for joy at full-time and various clips were posted to social media following the game.
Bayern are likely be waiting should they defeat Lyon in the other semi-final tonight , but you can almost guarantee they’ll have no time for celebrations.
The German outfit overwhelmed Barcelona 8-2 to reach the semi-finals and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed the celebrations were rather muted, despite the achievement.
“I went to the locker room after the game and I was expecting the guys to be celebrating this great victory,” he told Sky Sports Italia per Goal. “But I saw them there, very calm and focused instead, [and] ready for the next game.”
Bayern players spoke to the press after defeating Barca and they were bullish in their responses.
Leon Goretzka was questioned about the win and the impact it will have had on Lionel Messi.
“Messi must’ve been a childhood-idol of yours, did it hurt having to see him like this?” he was asked.
Not one for sentiment, the German midfielder brutally replied, “No, it didn’t hurt, it was fun actually.”
Manager Hansi Flick doesn’t want his side to lean on the Barcelona result against Lyon and has stated his side must “start from zero.”
“Less than 100% will not be enough,” Flick said per BBC Sport.
“The game starts from scratch. My team is focused. We have set big goals. But it is a game starting at 0-0 and we have to play with the same intensity as against Barca.”
It’s a stark contrast to the jubilant mood PSG were in and Bayern look motivated to win Europe’s elite competition for a sixth time.
They’re heavy favourites to defeat Lyon despite their own remarkable 3-1 victory over Manchester City last weekend.
Sunday’s final will likely see some of the world’s most talented players light up Lisbon, but winning mentality is what will ultimately separate the two sides.
