Sergio Ramos doesn’t want Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona but says the forward has earned the right to decide his future.
Messi sent shockwaves through the sports world when he asked to leave Barcelona after handing in a transfer request.
He no longer considers himself a part of Ronald Koeman’s squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.
Real Madrid captain Ramos has now weighed in on Messi’s decision to leave the Camp Nou by questioning his approach.
Speaking at a press conference on international duty with Spain, he said: “He’s earned the right to decide his future, but I don’t know if it’s the best way.”
However, the veteran defender, who has battled with Messi throughout the years during countless El Clasico clashes, hopes the Argentine star stays in Spain.
“For Spanish football, for Barcelona and for us, we’d like him to stay,” he added. “Leo makes the Spanish league, his team and the Clasicos better.
“You always like beating the best and he’s one of the best in the world.”
Messi’s future is still up in the air after his father and agent Jorge held talks with Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Wednesday.
When asked how he sees his son’s future, he replied: “The future at Barça, difficult, difficult. It’s difficult for Leo to stay.”
Manchester City are reportedly in pole position to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Though Jorge claims he’s unaware of their interest and claims he has not spoken to Pep Guardiola about a move to the Premier League.
Asked if Man City is a good option, he said: “I don’t know, there is nothing. I didn’t talk to Pep. No, with nobody.”
It’s now claimed Messi will stay at Barcelona until 2021 after a change of heart.
