Arjen Robben’s first goal in his second spell for FC Groningen was a typical left-footed strike from outside of the box and you could see how much it meant to the Dutchman.
Aged 36, Robben has come out of retirement to return to his boyhood club, who he joined as a 12-year-old many moons ago.
Having made his debut for Groningen as a 16-year-old before going on to become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer, he has relived the feeling of scoring in the green and white colours some twenty years later.
With the iconic No.10 on his back and the captain’s armband proudly displayed, the former Bayern Munich and Chelsea winger opened the scoring with an archetypal goal in the 17th minute of a 1-1 friendly draw with Arminia Bielefeld before wheeling away and fist-pumping the air in euphoria.
It was his first goal for Groningen since 28 April 2002, some 18 years ago.
Just over a year ago Robben decided to put his wand of a left peg to rest after a glittering 19-year stint in the game but has now gone back to where it all began for him after rejecting an offer from Brazilian side Botafogo.
His first competitive appearance in his return looks set to come against his former club PSV Eindhoven in the first fixture of the new Eredivisie season next Sunday.
