Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has revealed why he dropped Eden Hazard from the last two games against Denmark and Iceland in the UEFA Nations League.
The manager felt Hazard was not fit enough to play in any competitive match, a comment that raised an eyebrow at Real Madrid.
“Medically he’s absolutely fine, it’s just a question of being careful when bringing him back in,” Martinez told Cadena Cope.
“He’s still not 100 per cent and hasn’t been able to take part in group training at his club.
“We’re going to be very careful and not run any kind of risk.
“Eden needed to work on his own to be able to start pre-season without any risks.
“He’s not ready to play 90 minutes.”
The manager explained that the two matches were too competitive to risk an unfit player, “If we’d had two friendlies, I’d have given him the chance to play 45 minutes and then 60,” the Belgium coach explained.
“In a competitive match, you can’t do that.
“He had a big injury and he’s a player that has to be 100 per cent if he wants to play.”
Hazard is expected to team up with the rest of Real Madrid team at the Valdebebas as they prepare for their La Liga opener against Real Sociedad.
